Singaporean women look to bowl over competition

Posted : 12 Nov 2011 03:21:52

JAKARTA (UR): The Singaporean women bowling team is playing it safe, despite being the team to beat at the SEA Games. The team consists of 2008 world champion Jasmin Yeong Nathan and 2011 World Cup silver medalists Jazreel Tan and Daphe Tan. Given their impressive performance in international tournaments, they come to the Games as strong contenders for gold. However, they said they would not be overly confident. Everyone in the team is looking to play, said Yeong-Nathan, when asked about the pressure that inevitably comes with their reputation. Right now itâ been okay because weve been very focused on the game, so the pressure hasnt really set in. Five of the six women in the team that clinched the world number two ranking in September will be at the Games: Jazreel Tan, Shayna Ng, sisters Cherie and Daphne Tan and 19-year-old New Hui Fen. They will be joined by Yeong-Nathan, the first Singaporean to win a world cup title. We just feel good about [being seen as the ones to beat], that people are threatened by us, but we cant be overconfident either, added 22-year-old Ng, who holds the world record for the best-played six games in a row at 1,601 pinballs  which translates to an average score of more than 266 per game. It may seem like a smaller tournament to many other sports, but I think in bowling, some of the best bowlers are from Asia, so it still feels like a big tournament to us, said Yeong-Nathan. The womens team has been training two to three hours each day, stepping up their training program over the past few months to peak in time for the Games. Asked about key competitors in the region, the team mentioned Malaysia and Indonesia as strong countries, but maintained their familiarity with most of the neighboring countries players.
