Palembang (UR) – The Indonesian chess team defeated Thailand 2-0 in a first round match at the 26th SEA Games at the Hotel Swarna Dwipa in Palembang.

Grandmaster (GM) Susanto Megantoro defeated Hansing Saphong, while Women’s GM Irine Kharisma Sukandar defeated Taweesupmun Chanida.

The victory was hailed as a good start for Indonesia in its hunt for gold in the mixed pair category.

Team official Kristianus Liem said Indonesia’s toughest competitor in this category was Vietnam.

“However, if Irene and Susanto play consistently in the 6 rounds, there is a chance for both to win gold,” he said.

Team manager Ricardo SE said the win over Thailand meant the team’s chances at winning were wide open.

“The Philippines and Vietnam cannot be underestimated. The pressure to win gold lies on them,” he said.

Irene said playing white gave her an advantage in her win. “It allowed me to go on the attack from the start,” she said. (UR-8).
