An exhibition performance of the Indonesian martial art tarung derajat at the 26th SEA Games received an enthusiastic response from both participants and spectators at the Bung Karno sports complex in Central Jakarta on Sunday. Founder and chief guru Ahmad AA Boxer Sudrajat said he was delighted by the reception given to the sport. Thank you for all the support because my long efforts to include tarung derajat as a sporting events at the SEA Games finally came true. The exhibition is the perfect platform to get the sport to be included as a competition, AA Boxer said. He said he wished to raise the popularity of the sport to rival judo, karate, kempo, taekwondo and wushu. Following on from this exhibition, I and 24 coaches will visit countries in Southeast Asia to help develop the sport. This aims is to get the athletes to a standard level by the time of the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar, he said. The president of the Myanmar Tarung Derajat Federation, Khin Maung Tun, said the sport would feature as a competitive event at the 27th SEA Games in 2013. There is no reason for us not to include tarung derajat in 2013. As host, we have a right to include a new sporting event, including tarung derajat, Khin said while being accompanied by Hengy Silatang from the Indonesian Tarung Derajat Association. Khins sentiments are strongly supported by calls from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Timor Leste and Vietnam to include tarung derajat at the upcoming biennial event. Forty-eight athletes from eight countries, including Indonesia, took part in the exhibition to contest six gold medals in four mens and two womens events. UR-9
