Jakarta (UR): Indonesia’s men’s badminton team made amends for the women’s poor showing by winning gold after beating a Malaysia side that was visibly lacking the world’s best player, in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Former Olympic champions Markis Kido and Hendrawan Setiawan sealed victory for Indonesia with a crushing 21-10, 21-14 win over Mak Hee Chun and Ong Soon Hock.
At the 2009 SEA Games in Laos, Indonesia also won gold in the event with a win over Malaysia.
Kido and Hendra were backed by a raucous partisan crowd and dominated their opponents from the start.
Earlier, Tommy Sugiarto defeated Mohammad Arif bin Abdul Latif 21-13, 21-17, while Simon Santoso beat Daren Liew 20-22, 12-21.
Malaysia won a point through Lim Khim Wah and Goh Wei Shem who beat Bona Septano and Mohammad Ahsan in a tensely fought match 21-18, 15-21, 25-23.
“We predicted that the men’s team would win the gold medal,” team manager Maria Fransisca said.
We hope the players should take the momentum from this win into the individual competition that starts today, she said. UR 7
