Palembang (UR): Thailand’s women’s tennis team won the gold medal at the 26th SEA Games after defeating Indonesia at the Jakabaring Sports Complex in Palembang on Monday.

In the matches, Nungnadda Mannasuk beat Lavinia Tananta 6-7(4), 2-6. Ayu Fani Damayanti, who faced Noppawan Lercheewakarn, got off to winning start after she sealed a 6-2 win in the first set. But her opponent rebounded to win the second set 6-3 to send the game to a deciding set.

The third set was close with the players tied at 5-5. However, Ayu seemed to lose power while Noppawan steadied the pace to take the other two games to seal a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

“Ayu's game was stable. She played well but lost in the second game as Noppawan made very few errors." Indonesian team captain Angelique Widjaya said after the game.

She added that Lavinia played a safe game but was too careless in the second set because she really wanted to win the game.

Angelique said her team put in a good effort and their performance was commendable. “Even though we lost 2-0, we actually had the chance to win. The Thailand players’ performance was not special,” she said. (UR5/UR8).
