JAKARTA (UR): Veteran Philippine bowler Frederick Ong Mengawli won the gold medal in the men singles on Tuesday in Ancol, North Jakarta, at the 26th SEA Games on Tuesday.
He recorded the highest score of 1386. Ong’s teammate Jeremy Posadas came second with 1365, with bronze going to Malaysia’s Adrian Ang.
It was good start for the top-ranked Philippine team in their bid to win the majority of the 10 gold medals on offer.
The Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia are embroiled in a regional rivalry for superiority in the sport. They have attempted to top one another in previous tournaments, such as the Asian Bowling Federation-sanctioned events and the SEA Games.
The four bowling teams have been regular fixtures at the Games since Malaysia in 1977.
The Philippines won the most bowling medals at the SEA Games in the 1990s while Malaysia and Singapore dominated the sport from the 1990s to 2009.
Indonesia became a contender in the sport after winning five gold medals at the 2005 SEA Games in Manila.
At these Games, the abundance of world-class bowlers will guarantee tough competition. (UR)
