Indonesia wary of Vietnam, Malaysia in wushu

Jakarta (UR): Vietnam and Malaysia are strong contenders to put a dent in Indonesia's plan and could sweep the lion's share of the 20 gold medals on offer in wushu at the 26th SEA Games that starts on Friday in Jakarta.

The deputy head of the Indonesian Wushu Association (WI), Sandry Liong, said the organization expected Indonesia’s athletes to win five gold medals in the taolu event.

Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos, the Philippines and Indonesia are taking part in taolu.

Based on the draw on Wednesday morning, Indonesia’s Heriyanto and Johannes will perform in the nanquan event on Friday.

“We wish to win at least one gold medal either from Heriyanto or Johannes,” Sandry said.

The other two members of Indonesia’s men’s team in taolu are Achmad Hualifi and Aldi Lukman, while the women’s team comprises Susyana Tjhan, Lindswell, Desy Indri Astuti and Ivana Adelia.

Aldi and Hulaifi will compete in the machete event, Lindswell in taijiquan, Ivana and Desy in nanquan and Susyana in the sword event. UR-4
