Jakarta (UR): The Philippines defeated Malaysia to win the first gold medal in the men’s compound team event at the Bung Karno sports complex in Jakarta on Thursday at the 26th SEA Games.
Earl Benjamin Yap, Delfin Anthony Adriano and Rosendo Sombrio beat Malaysia’s Muhammad Zaki Mahazan, Ahsan Kaharuddin and Kok Meng Hoo 225-221.
“Their performance was better than expected. We are quite relieved to get the first gold medal from archery,” Philippines’ head coach Ricardo Verga said.
He said his athletes had managed to hold off Malaysia, who played well.
Verga said the team would concentrate on winning more gold medals, even though it looks set to miss its target of five gold medals.
“Realistically we can come up with four gold medals. We will concentrate on the mixed compound,” he said.
Prior to the final, the Philippines won a close battle against Singapore, who went on to concede the bronze medal to Myanmar.
The archery competition is still to stage the final of the mixed compound and the recurve, both of which are debuting at the SEA Games, on Friday. UR-1
