As its gold medal haul breaks 100, Indonesia will likely, in a few days, end up as the best team at the 26th SEA Games.
As of 10 pm Friday, Indonesia has collected 124 gold, 92 silver and 84 bronze medals, followed by Vietnam with 71 gold, 67 silver and 69 bronze medals.
It seems impossible for any other participating nation to catch up to Indonesia’s total at this stage, and only a miracle would see Indonesia replaced from the top of the medal tally with only four more days of competition and 181 more gold medals to go.
Indonesia is dominating some key sports. For instance, today the host country secured two gold medals after it ensured an all-Indonesia final in both the men's and women's badminton doubles.
Indonesian lifters are also dominating their sport. Eko Yuli Irawan won the 62-kilogram class, Triyanto won the 69-kilogram class and Sandow Waldemar Nasution won the 77-kilogram class.
Eko set a Games record for the snatch (139 kilograms), clean and jerk (166 kilograms), and a total lift of 302 kilograms.
Indonesia also topped the medal standings in several other sports such as pencak silat, karate, archery, wall climbing and roller skating. Today, Indonesia is sure to earn more of the 64 gold medals in competition.
However, it may still be too early to declare Indonesia the overall winner of the event. As mentioned by Rita Subowo, the president of the Games’ organizing body, there is still time left.
“We need to be careful because there are several sports that have not begun,” Rita said. (UR-2)
