JAKARTA-(UR): Timor Leste has finally won gold at the 26th SEA Games after Julianto Pereira and Dorceyana Borges won the mixed kumi embu (artistic) kyukenshi pair event.
The duo defeated Indonesia in the final on Saturday at GOR Ciracas in East Jakarta.
After the match Julianto said he had not expected victory, especially as the rival duo was the supposedly better team.
This is the country’s first gold medal since it first participated in the 2009 SEA Games in Laos.
“Of course I’m surprised and happy. Praise the Lord,” he said, adding that he and Dorceyana trained for eight months for the event.
Julianto and Dorceyana scored 264 in the final and said they hoped their win would inspire others from Timor Leste.UR-9
