Palembang (UR): Indonesia’s Ricky Yang beat compatriot Irsal Nasution to win the men’s 9-pool event at the 26th SEA Games in Palembang on Saturday.
In the semifinals, Irsal booked an easy 9-2 win over Vietnam’s Do The Kian, while Ricky posted a surprise 9-3 victory over event favorite Fransisco Bustamante of the Philippines.
Ricky also won the event at the 2007 Games, which Bustamante skipped.
“Obviously we are very relieved Indonesia finally won a gold medal in billiards,” he said.
Irsal said he became more confident after beating Jundel Mazon from the Philippines in the quaterfinals.
“The quarterfinal sapped my power, but after I defeated him I became more confident and played easier in the semifinal, and that helped me win,” Irsal said.
“This is my first SEA Games and of course I wanted to make a great first impression by winning gold in my debut,” he said.
Indonesia’s billiards head coach Robby Suarly said both Ricky and Irsal played very well in the semifinals.
“Irsal and Ricky were in their top form,” he said.
“I don’t think Bustamante performed at his usual level, and Ricky performed very well with accurate breaks,” Robby said.
Indonesia missed out on gold in snooker, English billiards and carom billiards. UR-4
