Jakarta (UR): A Singaporean grandmother stopped her chemotherapy sessions in order to participate at the 26th SEA Games, and she won a gold medal on Sunday.
Tan Yoke Lan (63) had to undergo a mastectomy after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but she ignored her doctor’s advice and left for Indonesia. Antara news agency quoted the Straits Time daily in Singapore as saying that Tan chose not to undergo chemotherapy as she wanted to compete in the bridge event.
At the event, she won gold with her partner Seet Choon Cheng on Sunday. “Only weeks ago, I wasn’t sure if I would be here,” the grandmother of six said. “But then I decided to come because I didn’t want to let my partner down.”
After winning the first bridge gold medal for Singapore, the pair hugged each other and cried at the Hotel Jayakarta in Palembang.
Tan said she would start chemotherapy once back in Singapore. “I’m a fighter and I have fight to the end,” she said.
