Following a visit to several construction sites for the upcoming South East Asian Games in Palembang last month, sports federations expressed confidence that the co-host city would get the venues ready in time.
Ami from the Indonesian Swimming Association (PRSI) said she was convinced the venue for the aquatic events would be finished by August.
“We planned to organize an Asian junior championship from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6 at the new venue. We believe it will be ready as scheduled,” she said.
Ami said her confidence was boosted by the fact that the contractor working on the venue was affiliated with swimming’s international governing body, FINA.
The South Sumatra branch of Perbakin said it closely followed developments on the construction of the shooting venue.
“It has to be built according to International Shooting Sport Federation standards,” Perbakin area secretary Dolok Saribu said. “We need to closely monitor the construction progress to avoid possible mistakes.”
Youth and Sports Ministry official Sakhyan Asmara said the construction of the athletes’ village, located at the Jaka Baring Sports Complex, was 24 percent complete.
Sakhyan, who accompanied the sports federations during the visit, said he was optimistic the athletes’ village would be ready in time for the Games. He referred to the establishment of the 32-story Hotel Mulia, which was built in less than six months for the 1997 SEA Games in Jakarta.
“The athletes’ village for the upcoming Games will only be four-stories. I believe the construction can progress a lot faster,” he added.
The biennial Games will be held in Palembang and Jakarta from Nov. 11-25. The event will feature an estimated 562 events in 43 disciplines.
The slow progress of construction in Palembang has raised public concern in the past few weeks.
