SEA Games Will Succeed

Posted : 15 Apr 2011 11:35:37

Venues of SEA Game XXVI are vigorously being constructed. Prior to the opening of the Games, the venues will be tested by running test-events on an international scale. Governor of South Sumatera H. Alex Nurdin is optimistic that the Southeast Asian sporting event will be a great success.

During a welcoming ceremony on Wednesday (23/3) at Aston Hotel Bandung, the Governor revealed to dozens of Chief Editors of the Jawa Pos Group that in relation to its preparation, he is optimistic that he is able to contribute to a successful Palembang SEA Games XXVI.

Alex also added that the Jakabiring sports complex is now completed with International-class venues. “Taking over the ‘title’ from Seoul, South Korea, these venue-constructions have won us the best shooting-range in Southeast Asia.”

Alex is also sure that constructions of all SEA Games XXVI-related infrastructure meets expected standards. “South Sumatera will use the SEA Games as a starting point for promoting the province to the world. While the Games acts as a secondary-goal, our primary goal is to persuade investors in making important investments in South Sumatera,” said Alex.

According to the Governor, the 2011 SEA Games is a perfect momentum for promoting both Palembang as well as South Sumatera as a whole. This is the only city in Indonesia complete with a full-scale athletes-village conveniently located near the sporting venues. In this respect, Palembang will be very similar to Chiang Mai, Thailand. In 1995 the city established an Athletes Village 1,000 km from the country’s capitol, Bangkok. The Village has revived the city’s economy.

Not only has the Village accommodated thousands of Southeast Asian athletes and supporters, but also revived the city’s economy and tourism.

Similarly, Melbourne became Australia’s sports training center after its super-complete sporting facilities were completed, capable of accommodating all types of sports-branches. Since then, Melbourne has became a new strong force in the Olympics.

Australia’s developement became so strong that its soccer team quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the World Championship. “I am certain that if Indonesia seriously focuses on its development, we will also create excellent soccer-players! I have proven this before when I sat as Musi Banyuasin’s regent. I hired a coach from overseas, and took local players from various areas,” explained Alex.

He explained that during the first three months, the main focus was on the athletes’ diet and nutrition. During the following three  months, the main focus was on ethics and physical training. “As a consequence, we were able to be the national runner up only withing six months. If similar practices were done for a longer period of time, I am sure we will succeed!” Alex said optimistically.

Based on his extended experiences, Alex Noerdin is very confident that the construction of the venues will be completed well on time. For Alex, sports is his main hobby. He has been involved, and succeeded in numerous sports organizations including karate-do, shooting, billiards, swimming, chess, basket ball, and soccer. “One thing for sure, we mean business,” he underlined.

As to what will become of the venues after the SEA Games, Alex explained that the Jakabiring Sport City (JBC) will be used as a national sports training center. “President SBY himself expressed that he expects the center to be used as a regional sports training center,” Alex explained.
