Governor of South Sumatera H. Alex Noerdin underlined that there was no hard proof to support the scepticism from people regarding the construction of venues for the Southeast Asian Games. On the contrary, the ongoing and punctual completion of the venues proved otherwise. In fact, the construction of several venues such as the shooting range were ahead of schedule, due to be completed on the 25th of July. Likewise, the tennis court will be completed on May 31st, and will be tested for international tournaments.
Alex also added that 18 out of the 23 sports competitions in South Sumatera will be held in the Jakabiring Sports City (JBC) Complex. The governor explained that the centralization of activities will assist athletes and officials in coordinating many activities as well as for training due to the short distances between venues and facilities. Likewise, all athletes will find no trouble travelling to and from their Athlete Village to the nearby venues. Nonetheless, Alex continued, his partners will also prepare local tranport such as bicycles, becaks, and golf-carts.
According to the Minister of Coordinating Peoples Welfare (Menko Kesra) Agung Laksono, some of the most important preparations for the SEA Games were coordination of venues and the training of the athletes. These two were particularly important as they directly effect the country’s reputation on a global scale.
The two preparations were in accordance to a message by the President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono - the Indonesian SEA Games must achieve three goals: implementation of the whole event, sports achievements, and economic empowerment for the people. The President also added that he expected that all Indonesian atletes will be able to make the country proud.
