Agung Mosque Palembang

Located in the middle of the city, at the intersection between Medeka and Sudirman Roads, Ilir, is Palembang’s pride and glory, the majestic 259 year old Agung Mosque Palembang. Built from year 1738 - 1748 by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I, the mosque measures up to 5,520 meter square, enabling it to hold 7,750 worshippers at a time.

Considering its mature age and the period it was built in, it goes without saying that the mosque is a prominent symbol of the Palembang Kingdom’s glorious days, which therefore makes it a construction of historical value.

Indeed, Agung Mosque Palembang is not only an ideal place for worshippers, or Moslems for that matter, but also a perfect tourist destination as it is guaranteed to mesmerize visitors with its uniqe architectural style, a mix of Chinese and European designs. This is particularly apparent by its pyramid-like roof-top, which is predominantly Chinese; and its tall and wide windows, evidently European. More importantly however, is that the mosque also functions as a multi-function religious building, holding countless Islamic ceremonies and activities, all of which are available for visitors to see.
