Thousand Islands

 

Thousand Islands, or better known to Indonesians as Pulau Seribu, is a collective term for a group of small islands located in the bay of Jakarta. There are approximately 300 islands in the group and reported to have more and more addition from small atolls and islets. When it comes to natural beauty, Thousand Islands is a host to pristine sea charms such as the classic elements of balmy tropical holiday, complete with white sandy beaches and the exotic panorama of the high seas amongst the marine and aquatic diversion that will make you treasure every minute of your visit. Thus, it is representable to call Kepulauan Seribu as the arch pelagic chain of paradise island, being the perfect alternative to the hectic basis of metropolitan life.

The islands stretch up to 45 kilometers northward from North Jakarta into the calm blue waters of Java Sea (the closest ones located only a few kilometers from Ancol). The islands are homes to some of the most engaging holiday spots, namely the magnificent coral reefs. the wonderful underwater world varied colourful fishes that also make Pulau Seribu an ideal spot for diving, snorkeling as well as fishing.

Of the chain, there are 37 islands that have been developed for tourism, a few of which are now privately owned by super-wealthy Jakartans. The most popular ones include Pulau Bidadari, Pulau Ayer, Pulau Kotok, Pulau Putri, Pulau Onrust and Pulau Bira. The names of the islands have become synonymous with the legend and mystique of the far east Bali, Java and Borneo. Some of these islands are also believed to have witnessed the country's prominent histories.

Pulau Bidadari is the closest resort island from Jakarta's shore. The island is as magical as marveling at the shimmering view of the city and sun-bathing under the influence of the stunning twilight while staying at one of the natural floating cottages. It serves many kind of water sports such as jet-skiing and fishing or even inland touring by bike, exploring a well-preserved lush green forest and a 23-meter wide fortress built in 1849 on the 6-hectare of golden sands.

Pulau Ayeris identical to Pulau Bidadari. It was once the private recreational retreat of the fromer kings of the Thousand Island and has also been visited recently by the recent President of Indonesia.

Pulau Kotok is the prominent spot for diving and snorkeling. The island offers you opportunities to interact with its amazing collection of marine life and beautiful coral reef formations. For divers, the turquoise warm water is irresistible for diving while snorkeling could lead you to discovering various unique marine creatures.

Pulau Putri offers the most magnificent beach resort that boasts a large aquarium and a 10-meter long underwater sea tunnel from which you can gaze at the stunning underwater life.

Pulau Onrust holds the historical element of the clusters. It was formerly used by the Dutch colonialists in the early 17th century as a ship repair center before being sacked and burnt by the Brits in 1800 which left several firm ruins to explore through.

There are many accommodation facilities to choose upon your visit to this oasis of tranquility. Each of them offers comfort in the most natural environment. The archipelago can be reachedd in about one to two hours from Marina Ancol by ferry or chartered boats.
